A Venezuela passa por um dos momentos mais conturbados de sua hist\u00f3ria. Uma crise pol\u00edtica, econ\u00f4mica e social que parece longe de uma solu\u00e7\u00e3o. De um lado o presidente Nicolas Maduro se agarra ao poder e enfrenta grandes protestos populares. Do outro Juan Guaid\u00f3, principal nome da oposi\u00e7\u00e3o e l\u00edder da Assembleia Nacional, se auto-proclamou presidente do pa\u00eds e foi reconhecido por alguns Estados, entre eles o Brasil. Uma crise que respinga em diferentes \u00e1reas, entre elas o esporte. Especialmente a nata\u00e7\u00e3o.<\/p>\n
A modalidade no pa\u00eds n\u00e3o tem tantos t\u00edtulos internacionais ao longo da hist\u00f3ria, mas num passado n\u00e3o t\u00e3o distante foi a segunda maior for\u00e7a da nata\u00e7\u00e3o sul-americana atr\u00e1s apenas do Brasil. Na d\u00e9cada passada o esporte do pa\u00eds recebeu farto investimento estatal do chavismo e da ind\u00fastria petroleira. Muitos atletas tiveram ainda a oportunidade de nadar e treinar no exterior, especialmente nos Estados Unidos.\u00a0O\u00a0resultado dentro d’\u00e1gua veio atrav\u00e9s de medalhas, recordes e conquistas. Tradicionalmente a Venezuela \u00e9 um pa\u00eds de poucas medalhas, mas sempre produziu grandes atletas ao longo da hist\u00f3ria. Ao todo o pa\u00eds tem 33 medalhas em Jogos Pan-Americanos, sete em Campeonatos Mundiais de piscina curta, uma em Mundiais de longa e apenas uma medalha ol\u00edmpica. Foi a partir de d\u00e9cada de 1980 \u00e9 que o pa\u00eds come\u00e7a a crescer gradativamente nas piscinas com destaque para dois nomes: Alberto Mestre e Rafael Vidal.<\/p>\n
Mestre defendeu a Venezuela em duas Olimp\u00edadas tendo sido finalista em Los Angeles-1984 nos 100m e 200m livre. Tamb\u00e9m conquistou cinco medalhas nos Jogos Pan-Americanos de Caracas em 1983 em um dos maiores feitos do esporte venezuelano. J\u00e1 Vidal \u00e9 o respons\u00e1vel pelo maior feito da nata\u00e7\u00e3o venezuelana. Em 1984 conquistou a \u00fanica medalha ol\u00edmpica do pa\u00eds ao terminar os 200m borboleta em terceiro lugar com 1min57s51, novo recorde das Am\u00e9ricas. Vidal ainda teve conquistas na nata\u00e7\u00e3o universit\u00e1ria americana e ganhou outras cinco medalhas no Pan de Caracas, assim como seu compatriota Mestre. Por\u00e9m, o destino foi cruel com Vidal. Em 2005 seu carro foi atingido por um ve\u00edculo que disputava um \u201cracha\u201d em alta velocidade. Ele faleceu aos 41 anos de idade.<\/p>\n
Na d\u00e9cada de 1990 o pa\u00eds continuou produzindo excelentes atletas e dois deles destacaram-se internacionalmente. Francisco S\u00e1nchez foi um dos principais velocistas da Am\u00e9rica do Sul nesta \u00e9poca, rivalizando e muitas vezes superando Fernando Scherer e Gustavo Borges nos 50m e 100m livre. S\u00e1nchez foi o primeiro venezuelano a ser campe\u00e3o mundial ao vencer os 50m livre na Praia de Copacabana no Mundial de curta em 1995. Quem tamb\u00e9m brilhou nesta d\u00e9cada foi Ricardo Monast\u00e9rio. Fundista e muito t\u00e9cnico, dominou o cen\u00e1rio sul-americano batendo em diversas ocasi\u00f5es Luiz Lima,\u00a0melhor atleta do fundo brasileiro e sido por muitos anos o recordista da Am\u00e9rica do Sul nos 1500m livre. O maior feito de Monast\u00e9rio aconteceu nos Jogos Pan-Americanos de Santo Domingo em 2003 quando faturou dois ouros nos 400m e 1500m livre. Ele tamb\u00e9m \u00e9 o \u00fanico nadador do pa\u00eds a ir ao p\u00f3dio em quatro edi\u00e7\u00f5es diferentes do Pan.<\/p>\n
