Durante a d\u00e9cada de 1980 tornou-se um dos grande destaque das competi\u00e7\u00f5es de nata\u00e7\u00e3o no interior paulista e em 1989 mudou-se para a capital para representar o Esporte Clube Pinheiros. Come\u00e7ou ent\u00e3o a escrever sua hist\u00f3ria.<\/p>\n<p>Ap\u00f3s conquistar t\u00edtulos e bater recordes nadando pelo Pinheiros seguiu o conselho de Maria Lenk e mudou-se para os Estados Unidos, visando treinar e cursar alguma faculdade. Foto: Satiro Sodr\u00e9\n\t\t\t\t<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n<p>Na d\u00e9cada de 1990 Gustavo foi um dos maiores atletas do esporte brasileiro, conquistando medalhas em Jogos Ol\u00edmpicos, Campeonatos Mundiais e Jogos Pan-Americanos, sendo por muito tempo o maior medalhista brasileiro desta competi\u00e7\u00e3o continental com 19 p\u00f3dios at\u00e9 ser superado por Thiago Pereira. Nesta \u00e9poca chegou a ser um dos grandes \u00eddolos nacionais sendo figura frequente em programas e comerciais de TV, levando a nata\u00e7\u00e3o a um outro patamar.<\/p>\n<p>\u00c9 at\u00e9 hoje o maior medalhista ol\u00edmpico da nata\u00e7\u00e3o brasileira, somando quatro medalhas sendo duas pratas e dois bronze em tr\u00eas Jogos Ol\u00edmpicos: prata nos 100m livre em Barcelona-1992, prata nos 200m livre e bronze nos 100m livre em Atlanta-1996 e bronze com 4x100m livre em Sidney-2000.\u00a0Despediu-se das piscinas nos Jogos Ol\u00edmpicos de Atenas-2004 ao nadar as eliminat\u00f3rias do revezamento 4x100m livre.<\/p>\n<p>Em 2012 entrou para o Hall da Fama da Nata\u00e7\u00e3o Internacional fazendo companhia a Maria Lenk. At\u00e9 hoje eles s\u00e3o os \u00fanicos brasileiros que receberam tal honraria. Ap\u00f3s deixar as piscinas, Gustavo tornou-se um empres\u00e1rio de sucesso idealizando uma metodologia e rede de academias de nata\u00e7\u00e3o que leva seu nome. Al\u00e9m disso \u00e9 palestrante e comentarista de nata\u00e7\u00e3o da TV Globo.
