Medalhista ol\u00edmpico, maior medalhista da hist\u00f3ria dos Jogos Pan-Americanos entre todas as modalidades,\u00a0campe\u00e3o mundial em piscina curta e dono de mais de 700 medalhas ao longo da carreira, o nadador de 31 anos estava sem clube desde o fim do ano passado e optou por encerrar sua vitoriosa carreira. Na 37\u00aa edi\u00e7\u00e3o do campeonato continental o jovem nadador de 18 anos estabelecia um novo recorde sul-americano para a prova com <strong>2min00s19<\/strong> e de quebra atingia o \u00edndice ol\u00edmpico para os Jogos de Atenas-2004. Foi a primeira vez que o quarteto Thiago Pereira, Michael Phelps, Ryan Lochte e Laszlo Cseh nadou junto uma final de grande competi\u00e7\u00e3o internacional. Foram quatro medalhas conquistadas no total, sendo uma delas de ouro em sua principal prova: os 200m medley. Com <strong>1min55s78<\/strong> ele n\u00e3o s\u00f3 bateu o recorde sul-americano como tamb\u00e9m superou Ryan Lochte pela primeira vez na carreira. Thiago n\u00e3o deu chance para os advers\u00e1rios e chegou a nadar em determinados momentos muito pr\u00f3ximo ao ent\u00e3o recorde mundial de Michael Phelps, obtidos no Mundial de Melbourne quatro meses antes. Foi na tradicional piscina curta de Berlim durante o circuito da Copa do Mundo da Fina. Dominante,\u00a0o brasileiro nadou contra o rel\u00f3gio\u00a0e cravou <strong>1min53s14. <\/strong>Por\u00e9m, a\u00a0nova marca mundial durou pouco, j\u00e1 que no m\u00eas seguinte o h\u00fangaro Cseh nadou 15 cent\u00e9simos mais r\u00e1pido no Europeu de curta. O brasileiro chegava a sua terceira Olimp\u00edada pressionado por nunca ter subido ao p\u00f3dio nos Jogos ou no Mundial de longa. Para muitos, era sua \u00faltima oportunidade de finalmente conquistar a t\u00e3o sonhada medalha num evento de ponta. Nos 400m medley ele teria pela frente os velhos conhecidos Ryan Lochte e Michael Phelps, al\u00e9m dos jovens em ascens\u00e3o Kosuke Hagino e Chad Le Clos. Com menos press\u00e3o devido a prata ol\u00edmpica, ele nadou mais tranquilo e teve um saldo positivo no evento ganhando duas medalhas de bronze nos 200m e 400m medley. Algo para poucos e que Thiago Pereira conseguiu nos 400m medley no Trof\u00e9u Maria Lenk. E no ano seguinte ele conseguiu ampliar a sequ\u00eancia para 13 t\u00edtulos. Thiago igualou o recorde no \u00faltimo dia ao ficar com a medalha de prata nos 200m medley perdendo o ouro na batida de m\u00e3o para Henrique Rodrigues.
