Esta semana a famosa revista Swimming World publicou em seu site (clique aqui para ler<\/a>) uma reportagem bastante interessante sobre quando Michael Phelps liderou o ranking mundial dos 100m livre. O fato ocorreu na temporada 2007, quando o americano permaneceu na lideran\u00e7a da prova ao longo de tr\u00eas meses. O mais curioso \u00e9 que o tempo que al\u00e7ou Phelps a lideran\u00e7a foi obtido na abertura de um revezamento.<\/p>\n

Ocorreu no primeiro dia de provas do Campeonato Mundial de Esportes Aqu\u00e1ticos de Melbourne, em 25 de mar\u00e7o de 2007. Phelps abriu o revezamento 4x100m livre para 48s42, abrindo frente para os demais concorrentes. No fim o quarteto americano, que ainda teve Neil Walker, Cullen Jones e Jason Lezak, venceu com 3min12s72 superando o recorde de campeonato.<\/p>\n

Quatro dias depois aconteceu a final dos 100m livre e a medalha de ouro foi dividida entre o italiano Filippo Magnin e o canadense Brent Hayden, ambos nadando para 48s43. A dupla campe\u00e3 mundial deixou Melbourne atr\u00e1s de Phelps no ranking mundial por apenas um cent\u00e9simo. O americano seria superado exatos tr\u00eas meses depois, em 25 de junho quando Alain Bernard nadou para 48s12 no Campeonato Franc\u00eas. Phelps terminou a temporada na terceira posi\u00e7\u00e3o do ranking mundial, atr\u00e1s tamb\u00e9m do sueco Stefan Nystrand que nadou para 47s91 em uma competi\u00e7\u00e3o em Paris no dia 5 de agosto.<\/p>\n

Mesmo sendo bastante vers\u00e1til, o americano nunca foi um ex\u00edmio velocista tendo conquistado medalhas em grandes eventos nos 100m livre apenas em provas de revezamento. Foram quatro medalhas ol\u00edmpicas e outras quatro em Mundiais conquistas. Em todos os p\u00f3dios nos Mundiais ele abriu a disputa, j\u00e1 em Olimp\u00edadas ele normalmente era o segundo nadador a cair na \u00e1gua, com exce\u00e7\u00e3o de Pequim-2008, quando Phelps marcou seu melhor tempo pessoal na dist\u00e2ncia na abertura do \u00e9pico revezamento: 47s51.<\/p>\n

Mesmo n\u00e3o sendo especialista nesta prova, Phelps soma \u00f3timos resultados na prova mais tradicional da nata\u00e7\u00e3o. No ranking all time da prova, segundo o site da World Aquatics<\/a>, o americano aparece na 18\u00aa coloca\u00e7\u00e3o com 47s51 a frente de dois campe\u00f5es ol\u00edmpicos que foram seus contempor\u00e2neos: o neerland\u00eas Pieter van den Hoogenband e o americano Nathan Adrian.
